Lunch at the Hunter Gatherer. True Story.

Posted in Fig Columbia

That’s right, your favorite brew pub is serving lunch now. You know what this means? Columbia has another great place to go for lunch. And beer! Owner Kevin Varner has long been known for his brewing skills and the kitchen at Hunter Gatherer stands on its own. In fact, the Shop Tart doesn’t even drink beer (Sorry, Kevin!) and she likes to eat there. Yesterday was the first day they were open for lunch and it couldn’t have come at a better time. The weather was perfect and the babysitter had canceled so the toddler was available for company.

There are some new additions, like these umbrellas, big enough to cover a table for four so you can enjoy lunch outside no matter how harsh the sun.

And the new changing table in the bathroom makes Hunter Gatherer easier on all you mamas who are hoping the baby will sleep in her stroller through lunch only to have her awaken – in desperate need of a diaper change – right as your entree arrives. At least you won’t have to go back to the car.

The restaurant felt positively cheery. Why? Well, certain waitresses are very excited about working less evenings and there were flowers from the All-Local Market on the bar. Doesn’t Donna from Floral and Hardy Farms have the prettiest blooms?

The food, of course, is delish. For now, the menu is a shorter version of their dinner menu, including salads, sandwiches, pizza and some specials. The toddler, predictably, had the pizza. He has made a lot of progress, actually. His parents used to have to tell him everything in a restaurant was “chicken and fries.”

His father had the pizza of the day, which involved roasted leeks and was superb.

The Shop Tart had Ginny’s Blue Cheese Salad, no onions, light on the Gorgonzola, add chicken, dressing on the side. Isn’t she fun?

Because she is used to going to the Hunter Gatherer at night, lunch there felt very relaxed, like a mini-vacation in the middle of the day. Maybe it was the weather. Maybe it was the fact they ran into several friends by chance. Maybe it was because she was in a bar in the middle of the day. Whatever it was, it was lovely. She is already picturing lunch inside during the holiday season, breaking up a long day of shopping with a burger and a cocktail. Maybe you will join her? As you can see from the picture below, the Hunter Gatherer is open for lunch Tuesday through Friday and is located at 900 Main Street.

After an exciting afternoon in toddler world, the Shop Tart slapped some curlers into her hair and put on a party dress for the Columbia Children’s Theatre Cocktail Party. Speaking of the party dress, it was 3.1 Phillip Lim, as was everything else she wore yesterday except her workout clothes. She started the day in a jumpsuit and finished it in the party dress and her gold and black Phillip Lim motorcycle jacket. The same one Rachel Zoe was wearing in the “Day After the Oscars” scene on her show the other night. Ahem. How cool is the Shop Tart? Of course, Rachel had the jacket a year before she did, when it wasn’t on sale for the price of a nice dinner out. A day of Phillip is a happy day indeed.

The party was fab. The Shop Tart met Hannah Horne who shared all kinds of fashion secrets and looked mad chic in her dress, which consisted of a sheath-like, snake print top and a black, belted pencil skirt. According to some fashion magazine or another*, snake print is the animal motif of the season. Hannah’s top was gorgeous, a beautiful neutral-toned print. You can see the dress here. Lovely! And isn’t the Shop Tart clever for watching the news? Even if she does do it to see what they’re wearing.

After the CCT party, the the Shop Tart and her husband headed to Tombo Grille for a snack. They met a few other party-goers, including Camille Maurice, who was looking lovely in a Tracy Reese cocktail frock from VanJean. The Shop Tart ordered salmon ceviche, which arrived with a garnish of peach-infused vodka. It looked like a straight up shot to the Shop Tart and she thinks $7 for a shot and some salmon is a great deal. The ceviche was delicious, especially with the vodka.

She also snacked on her friend’s hummus plate. The hummus at Tombo is garnished with goat cheese and pine nuts and served with plenty of pita bread.

Her wine, recommended by the bartender, was particularly tasty. So tasty, she had the waitress write it down: Picpoul de Pinet Coteaux du Languedoc. Good stuff, yo. At last, it was time to go home, where the Shop Tart climbed into bed with a cup of tea, a magazine and an episode of Lie to Me on the laptop. Heavenly!

Happy Shopping and don’t forget to tell them you read it on the Shop Tart!

* The Shop Tart flipped through all of hers this morning trying to find the piece, but it just didn’t happen. Maybe tomorrow…

Hannah is gorgeous, but you should have posted a full length photo–what were the shoes! Also, isn’t she so much prettier in person than on TV, which is really saying something!

    Yea, a new lunch place!

This talk of wintry holiday lunches has me feeling kindof stoked for the upcoming season. Especially the daytime burger and cocktail part. But first: we gotta get through The State Fair *and* Halloween.

Please say you’re going to do a woman-on-the-street fashion roundup at the Fair?!?! I will hold your corn dog.

The salmon ceviche looked intimidating. Maybe thats why they garnish with the vodka?
