Where’s your big lunch this week?

The Shop Tart knows she should take her lunch to work more often. Sometimes she does. But, much like many of you, she’s tempted by all the delicious lunches Columbia has to offer. A quick salad at El Burrito or whatever the Rosewood Market deli is serving are excellent choices. But sometimes you want a special lunch. Carlie and the Shop Tart wanted just such a lunch the other day and headed straight for Mr. Friendly’s. The art in the bar, by Leah Avery, was intriguing.

The Shop Tart and Carlie agreed on two dishes, “Chicken ‘n’ Biscuits” and Cornmeal Seared Lake Victoria Perch. Let’s start with the perch, which was outstanding. Why has the Shop Tart never had chipotle-bacon tartare sauce before? Because it is awesome. In stead of grits and succotash or slaw, she went with succotash and slaw. Mr. Friendly’s grits are delightfully creamy, but slaw vs. succotash proved too difficult a choice. The light cornmeal coating was deliciously crispy and the fish was mild and tender.

And the chicken and biscuits. OHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSH. Is this still on the menu? Will it be there again some day? Please say yes. Ain’t nothing wrong with a big juicy piece of country fried chicken, house-made sausage gravy, cheddar cheese and creamy mashed potatoes with a side of creole slaw. The Shop Tart has eaten a lot of chicken and biscuits with gravy — more than her fair share, for sure — and this was top of the line. Best ever.

So, you’re probably craving Mr. Friendly’s for lunch, and you should totally go, but if you can’t make it for lunch, how about dinner? Every Monday night at Mr. Friendly’s, enjoy moonpies, meatloaf and half-price wine. Speaking of wine, Mr. Friendly’s offers plenty of $4 glasses and $15 bottles at lunch, because nothing says fun like wine at lunch! Need more incentive? Are you a Mr. Friendly’s e-mail subscriber? Sign up by emailing them and asking to be added to the list for a weekly newsletter that often includes specials for subscribers only. You may or may not see a message like this:

“Don’t forget that our E-mail readers can enjoy Happy Hour at the Mr. Friendly’s bar each and every Monday through Thursday from 5 to 6:30!
Simply mention that you are an E-reader and we’ll take half-off select appetizers, and $1 off all cocktails & brews, or $2 off any glass of wine! Just remember though…if you don’t mention that you know about our E-reader Happy Hour…NO DISCOUNT FOR YOU!”

See you there soon! So, that takes care of Monday. Looking for something cool to do tomorrow night? Join the Conservation Voters of South Carolina for a private tour of Nature and the Grand American Vision: Masterpieces Of The Hudson River School Painters. Tickets are $25 and we are told there will be wine! Yeah! The Shop Tart and her middle child, the X-Man, saw the exhibit on Saturday, sans wine bien sûr, and it was fabulous. They also took advantage of the Museum Shop’s current sale for members: 35 percent off everything.

Hi Shop Tart– Do you know a central place that lists all of the happy hour deals downtown? My girlfriends and I are looking for places that have good drink AND food specials; we thought the Shop Tart might know a good website! Thanks!
