Whew! The Shop Tart is back from Haiti and her head is still spinning with thoughts about everything she saw there. (For a brief window, check out this post on The Kitchn, about a party the South Carolina crew attended in Cange.) Anyhow, she needs to hit the ground running, because this is a big week! How big? Check out editor Dan Cook’s piece in Free Times today, Columbia is Busytown. As if there weren’t enough going on — here’s one more…
New Artists + New Art + You!
The Contemporaries’ Artist of the Year gala and silent auction is coming up on Friday, April 26th, at the Columbia Museum of Art. Now in its 10th year, CAY is a chance for emerging artists across South Carolina to get exposure at a signature event and promote their artwork. It’s also a great opportunity to get your hands on dynamic, meaningful pieces by up and coming artists, securing bragging rights that you knew them before they were household names.
Want to go ahead and get motivated for the silent auction? Check out the Contemporaries’ Facebook page for a sneak peak of all the art that will be available this year. [Ed. Note: Every year, the Shop Tart looks at the preview. Every year, she finds something at the auction that she swears she missed in the Facebook gallery. Please come see the art live!] CAY 2013 promises to be an evening of creativity, imagination and originality.
A few Contemporaries board members share some of their recent purchases from CAY, along with what inspired them about each piece.
“I bought this HUGE painting toward the end of the night,” says Debi Schadel of Margaret Rose Smith’s “The Sleeper.” “It was something that I had overlooked on my initial pass-through because it was on an easel. It has really become one of top CAY purchases – I’m still in love with it!” [Ed. Note: The Shop Tart is still kicking herself for not paying more attention last year. She would have totally tried to outbid you, Debi, no matter how much she likes you.]
“We’d had our eye on Roy Paschal’s ‘Banjo Player’ all night,” says Meg Kinnard Hinson. “My husband found the rustic setting reminiscent of his childhood in the PeeDee in the 1980s, a rural culture that is disappearing all too quickly. Several other bidders had their eyes on this treasure, but we were determined to go home with it, and we’re so glad that we got to do so.”
“The positive and negative space of this image immediately drew me in,” Hinson says of another CAY 2012 purchase, Jenna Sach’s “Falling Out Of Wonderland.” “I see this image every day right outside my bathroom door, and it’s a refreshing presence as I begin and end my day.”
The Shop Tart herself has scored several favorite pieces at CAY over the years. She always looks forward to the auction and can’t wait for this year’s event!
We hope to see you at the Columbia Museum of Art on Friday. Tickets are $20 for Contemporaries members and $40 for non-members. Come get your art on!
